Slange Vaa

Slange Vaa

Gruppo musicale attivo a Bologna tra '70 e '801983® original recording, 2023 digital remix

Slange Vaa, the awakening from a decades-long sleep: from strictly acoustic and totally analog instruments (1983) to Artificial Intelligence (2023)
Slange Vaa was the name chosen by a group of musicians who in Bologna proposed interpretations of popular pieces from the Celtic tradition (that extended from Ireland to northern Italy) between 1970 and 1980; all musical instruments played were strictly acoustic. In 1983, 13 songs were recorded in a semi-pro studio and a cassette was produced: the 8-track master remained in its box for a very long time. We awakened that reel from its 40-year sleep to mix all the pieces again according to the most modern digital technologies.
HERE you can listen to the 13 songs (WAV 48kHz, 24 bit) with a quality that was unthinkable in 1983. Not content with this, in the belief that today music is liquid, perhaps a video would have been able to capture more attention, commenting on the plot of the musical message and the plot of the lyrics. And the images? Artificial Intelligence algorithms for graphics have come to the rescue, i.e. the ability to transform a descriptive text, a textual suggestion, into images, also according to various pictorial styles of the most famous artists. And we are only at the beginning, probably soon we will be able to create an even more advanced version (2.0?) …The result is exceptional, as can be seen from our Slange Vaa movie (mp4 1080p, 50fps, mp3 audio).

THE GROUP IS FORMED

Inglese

Between the 1970s and the 1980s, the artistic and musical scene in Bologna was vibrant and diverse. In 2006, the city was internationally recognized as a UNESCO Creative City of Music, a prestigious acknowledgement of its rich musical tradition. Alongside avant-garde music and theater, there was a pulsating and heterogeneous artistic energy. Osterie, which were like musical cellars, could be found everywhere in the city and were popular gathering places. Guido Rotolo and Bruno Massini formed a group with a good repertoire of covers, including blues and country. Their performances attracted a certain level of interest at the Osteria delle Dame, an ancient cellar (possibly a brothel in past centuries) founded by the Dominican friar Michele Casali and Francesco Guccini. Nando Gurioli played the violin but was also excellent at playing the double bass and the saxophone. Despite being older, he had already played in the orchestra with Nilla Pizzi in the 1950s and with Gròpp 71 in the 1960s. He was a constant presence at the legendary Club 37, a meeting place for actors and cabaret performers. Guido played the mandolin, the guitar, the 5-string banjo, and had a very good singing voice.

Bruno tells the story: “It was 1977; we happened to see Sergio Endrigo singing ‘Donna Lombarda’ on TV, a piece from the Italian folk tradition. It caught our attention. I quickly arranged it for classical guitar, Nando immediately knew what to do, Guido took care of the mandolin. We were a bit apprehensive about proposing such a style change in the tavern, but the success was enormous, there was a loud demand for an encore. Guido came up with another piece (‘Il re dell’acqua’), which he had discovered I don’t remember where, still in the vein of traditional Italian music from previous centuries. We understood that the genre appealed to the audience.”

During this initial phase in the band, there was also an American guy studying Medicine in Bologna: Pat Jaccarino, a skilled guitarist and singer, who decisively influenced the group with his musical culture and the particular way in which Americans play Celtic music. After graduating in 1978, he returned to the United States, where he would successfully practice medicine in New York. Giorgio Massini was Bruno’s older brother. He worked in Milan, but his presence was deeply felt; he had been friends with Guido for years.

After returning to Bologna, Giorgio joined Guido, Bruno, and Nando. Using his great musical expertise, he dedicated himself to diligently composing arrangements for other songs that all had in common Gaelic folk traditions, starting with Ireland and Scotland, and ending with our Friuli region, passing through Brittany, a region in northwestern France where the Celtic language of the British group had developed since the 5th century AD. He then joined the group Pierluigi Barbieri with his double bass. Pierluigi was also in his fifties in the early 1980s. The last addition was Pietro Malaguti, whom they met at the “Vini d’Italia” tavern in Bologna. Pietro, a flute graduate with a great passion for the bagpipe, developed this aspect further by founding a bagpipe school directly in Manorhamilton, Ireland, where he currently resides with his wife. For several years, this group performed live concerts in Bologna and the region, gaining some recognition in the tavern scene under the name “Slange Vaa“.

2 – SOLO STRUMENTI ACUSTICI

Molte esecuzioni in parallelo

2 – ONLY ACOUSTIC INSTRUMENTS

Between the winter of 1982 and the spring of 1983, the band recorded an album (which was released with the obligatory SIAE stamp in cassette format) and self-distributed it during the subsequent concerts, although this period was short-lived. The band, due to the professional commitments of all the members, disbanded in 1985. Pierluigi Barbieri passed away prematurely in 1987 at the age of only 54. Nando Gurioli passed away in 2004. Similarly prematurely, Giorgio Massini (60) passed away. The most recent unfortunate event occurred in 2023 when Guido Rotolo (73) passed away. Bruno Massini and Pietro Malaguti remain. Domenico Servucci, who was a guest on some tracks playing the bagpipes and other instruments, is still a percussionist at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna.

“Cheers” in Gaelic
Slange Vaa is the name chosen by a group of musicians based in Bologna who, between the 70s and 80s, performed interpretations of popular Celtic songs. The expression “Slange Vaa” represents a Gaeli toast, an expression of good health. We have a recent testimony of this in the British TV series “Victoria” (Episode 7, Season 2), a television drama about the queen who reigned over Great Britain and Ireland for a large part of the 19th century. During a hunting trip, Victoria and her husband Albert got lost and were forced to spend the night in the home of hospitable Scottish country farmers. In that area, the Gaelic tradition was evidently strong. These kind-hearted people, although unaware of the royal status of their guests, served them a drink and one can clearly hear the toast “slange vaa” as they raised their glasses. The exact written Gaelic notation is “slàinte mhath“, which translates literally as “good health,” but there are six or seven different variations of the spelling in Scotland. Gaelic, in addition to being the traditional Irish language still spoken today in certain areas, also includes Scottish Gaelic and Manx Gaelic within its group.

All the musical instruments used in the 13 pieces of traditional folk music were strictly acoustic. The only electronic equipment used was the Tascam 80-8 multitrack recorder, with eight tracks on half-inch open reel tapes. This technology was becoming popular in the semi-professional field in the 1970s (professional studios had 16 and later 24 tracks on two-inch tapes). The magnetic tape inevitably suffered from a gentle hiss, the background noise that affected every recording. While the recording industry used fairly sophisticated and expensive noise reduction systems, the semi-pro sector relied on less effective and cheaper circuits. Naturally, our Tascam 80-8 had no background noise reduction system. Its dynamic range could not exceed 60-65 dB, but by skillfully modulating the signal, it would still ensure a good outcome. Recording sessions only took place on holidays because everyone had other commitments to ensure their income: “carmina non dant panem” as the Latin poet Horace said, meaning poetry and art in general do not provide sustenance, except for sporadic exceptions (one in a thousand, according to Gianni Morandi), often fortuitous and not necessarily related to actual abilities, sometimes greatly disproportionate in terms of reward. Nevertheless, they serve as nourishment for the mind and food for emotions.

Many parallel executions
In multitrack recording, multiple musical instruments and vocals can be recorded either one at a time or simultaneously on separate tracks: sounds can be played, processed, and manipulated individually. For example, after recording some parts of a song, an artist might listen to only the guitar part, muting all the other tracks. If the recording of an instrument is not satisfactory or an error is found and needs to be corrected, only the specific section of that instrument can be re-recorded, rather than the entire part. This freedom to take action and make changes represents one of the most significant advantages of multitrack technology. If all the voices and instruments in a recording are individually recorded on separate tracks, the sound engineer or producer has complete control over the final structure of the song during the final mixing. The first 8-track recorder, a true prototype, was built by Ampex in the United States in 1957. Referred to as the Octopus, it weighed 110 kg, cost $10,000, and was installed in Les Paul’s personal studio, the creator of the famous guitar bearing his name (Gibson Les Paul). In the following decades, various versions of multitrack recorders were built, including by European companies. In the semi-pro market, the Japanese industry was gaining popularity; Tascam and Fostex, in particular, offered simpler circuits and mechanics at significantly lower costs. In the mid-1980s, a 24-track recorder from the Swiss company Studer cost as much as a small apartment, while an 8-track amateur recorder cost eight million Italian lire.

3 – AT WORK

In the absence of a drum set section (which typically provides the first useful reference for “timing” in the construction of each song), we began by recording a metronome track, at a variable cadence depending on the score. Then, listening to the guiding metronome in headphones, each musician would perform their own execution. Sometimes the vocals were recorded first, other times the parts of the flutes or guitars were recorded. We then proceeded with the overlay of the violin, double bass, Scottish drum, and all the other instruments. Sometimes the performance was started from scratch because it was deemed unsatisfactory, other times only a part was redone, “flying in” on the previous performance and replacing only the wrong verse. A typical recording studio work: this method of “building” a musical piece with multiple parallel executions, until all the arrangements were completed, was already the most commonly used for recording pop music. The method is still in use, even though the tape recorder has been replaced by computer + software.

Regarding microphones, always a critical aspect of every recording, the solution of overlaying the new performances on the previous ones, one at a time (on different tracks), allowed us to use practically the same microphones all the time. They were two AKG 451-EB condenser microphones with CK1 cardioid capsule and small diaphragm, objects still strictly “made in Austria” of excellent quality in those years. They would still be capable of delivering worthy performances today, almost half a century later!
The mixer was an excellent Chilton QM1, a classic product of the British school of the 70s, widely used by the BBC as well. It was entirely transistor-based, had microphone preamplifiers equipped with input transformers, had a rather comprehensive 3-band EQ section with adjustable filter slopes, and a compressor/limiter on the outputs. Unlike American in-line mixers, British mixers were built with a separate section dedicated to return signals from the recorder, in that case, 8 inputs grouped on the right side of the console.

The monitor speakers used were the JBL 4330 with 15-inch woofers, bi-amplified; they would also be perfectly suited for a modern recording studio. The recording sessions took several Sundays of work. In the spring of 1983, the mixing was performed: since there was no automation system at all, each track or group of tracks was manually manipulated by someone in the studio to adjust the volume or pan, helping to build the stereo image.

4 – A NEW CHALLENGE

After that happy and rewarding adventure, the reel that contained all the precious performances remained in the archives on a shelf, well protected in its box, for a long, long time. A sleep that lasted a whopping 40 years! Reflecting on that experience today, we cannot help but notice that the digital world was completely foreign to it: the Compact Disc, now already neglected, had been introduced to the market just a few months ago! Meanwhile, no musical instrument was electronically amplified and all the (few) signal processors used at that time were totally analog, including a self-built reverb generator using a large harmonica metal plate and two pick-ups to simulate a stereo environment.

In 2022, the idea was born: what if we took the reel and played it on a vintage tape recorder, and then transferred everything to the digital domain? This leap would have opened the doors to an immense storehouse of tools of all kinds, some of which were unimaginable at the time. But would the sound quality improve? Would there be a risk of altering the original imprint too much? And most importantly, how would the magnetic tape physically react? Would it crumble, as it has happened in some similar cases? None of that happened. Digitization was a success; although the reel did lose small amounts of oxide, requiring us to meticulously clean the playback heads and the entire tape path after each track, the high speed of the tape (38 cm/sec) allowed the high frequencies to be well-preserved.

Once the WAV files were installed on the computer, a painstaking cleaning process began, a visual “cut and sew” following the waveform to physically eliminate any portion of the track where there was no useful sound, such as a pause in a verse, an interruption in the performance, an undesired noise, or a bleed from the headphones. The tape hiss, although clearly audible, was never a problem because a suitable plug-in on each track quickly helped reduce it, leaving only the useful signal to be processed with other tools such as equalizers, compressors, dynamics expanders, room processors, and so on. It was possible to correct some imperfections in individual notes and synchronize slightly misaligned verses: all of these operations—relatively easy in the digital realm—would not have been physically feasible with multitrack magnetic tape. This “digital” phase also required several working sessions, surprisingly held on Sundays, despite the retirement status of those involved.

In conclusion, more modern sound characteristics emerged, instruments gained greater presence, and the vocals and choirs became powerful and easily distinguishable. Other effects were used on the low frequencies to give more body to the double bass and the acoustic bass, making them more recognizable today, or to simulate the reverberation of a concert hall. Not overdone, just enough for the sounds to blend together harmoniously.

5 – THE ROLE OF AI

The cure put into this remastering would require a careful listening, surely on devices of a certain quality, much superior to the one offered by the toy speakers of a smartphone or tablet. It would be better to use a good pair of headphones to fully appreciate the extended frequency response of each of the thirteen tracks. The work could probably have been considered complete with the stereo mixing, but a thought immediately came to mind: today music is fluid, its listening is often distracted and superficial, perhaps a video would have been able to capture more attention and maybe adequately comment on the plot of the musical message and the warp of the lyrics. But with what images? There are some video shots of musicians from forty years ago, but the quality is really low, and anyway they are snippets that have the value of a testimony, but they cannot support thirteen tracks.

Moreover, it would not have been possible to resort to other musicians, it would have made no sense. Some Irish, Celtic, or Italian-based videos exist on the web, with monuments, images of nature, settings of villages, but we would have entered the realm of reproduction permits to be requested and obtained. And anyway, where could we ever find a witch who “made a steed entirely of sand,” as read in the lyrics of “The Water King“?
The solution came during the last few months when Microsoft gradually consolidated its commitment to its “image creator,” integrating artificial intelligence algorithms for graphics within Bing. In the beginning, the quality left much to be desired, the faces were distorted, the noses were crooked, the mouths resembled caves, the eyes were cross-eyed at best, if not triangular or empty sockets. But already in the autumn of 2023, the situation has radically changed, the representation of musicians, for example, with the whole range of their possible and imaginary instruments, in medieval or Renaissance costumes, in crowded taverns, in village squares or snowy forests, has improved to such an extent as to leave one astonished. And the “steed” is made of sand itself!
Even “the evil eye of the Water King” is decidedly wicked and disturbing. This phase of video construction was not exactly quick either; it was necessary to “ask” Bing hundreds and hundreds of images, choose the best ones, formulate requests, refine queries, redefine them with greater accuracy because the algorithm showed misunderstandings. Not to mention the “time-outs” imposed by Microsoft itself, which offers everyone the possibility to use such a powerful tool free of charge, but rationing access over time (otherwise it would be paid).

Artificial Intelligence
appplied to Graphics
Bing’s (Microsoft) Image Creator is a product that allows users to generate artificial intelligence images using the DALL·E technology, now in its incredibly powerful and accurate version 3. This algorithm, proposed by OpenAI in early 2021, is the result of years of development work by its creators and is capable of interpreting textual inputs and transforming them into images. In practice, based on a text request, the artificial intelligence will generate a set of images corresponding to that request. The DALL·E algorithm is based on a technology known as CLIP, which stands for Computational Linguistics for Information Processing. Version 3 can generate higher quality and more faithful images to the prompt compared to the original version. The images are absolutely photorealistic and more or less coherent with the requests; it requires some familiarity with the definitions to pilot the algorithm towards the desired result. However, they are still creative and artistic images, in some ways astonishing, as can be seen in our film Slange Vaa.

Now all that remains is to watch the video.
With an affectionate and moving memory for those who are no longer with us, with due attention to the commitment of the musicians, and why not, with a thought also for those who wanted to awaken that reel from its decades-long sleep.
